Dinner at Grandma's

Charles Ilaria III

The thing that I most remember about growing up was how Grandma could cook! There was one time when me, Karen, Terri and Greg went to Grandma's in Newark. She must have made 4 lb of cavatelli, an entire bowl of gravy meat, and chicken parm. We had to eat something from every dish (or she would get insulted!).

I also remember going to the East Orange house at Christmas. It must have been in the sixties. Of course, all the aunts and uncles were there, so us kids were relegated to the kitchen. I think that it was more fun out there, because , if we didn't kill each other, Grandma/Grandpa and our parents left us alone. Anyhow, I remember going there around 1 or 2, sitting at the table and eating, starting usually with macaroni (always home made and very delicious), the gravy meat, a salad, a meat dish of some sort, usually ham or roast beef, then the fresh fruit and desserts. The aunts and uncles usually had coffee (black or brown?). And after all that eating, Grandma usually made her world famous pizza. (No wonder we all have a weight problem!).
